Which exam to take first

Texas wants the written exam first, while Colorado wants the practical first, so the order depends on your state. New York accepts either.

Which exam comes first depends on your state

Many states ask for a written exam and a practical exam. The order is not the same everywhere. Check yours before you pay for anything.

Texas: written first

In Texas, you cannot sit for the practical exam until you have passed the written exam.

A Texas exam eligibility is good for 5 years. You may test an unlimited number of times in that period.

Colorado: practical first

Colorado reverses the order. You must pass the practical test before you can pay for and schedule the theory test.

In Colorado, the clock starts when you pass the practical. You then have one year to complete and pass the theory test.

Colorado sets waiting periods between attempts. They are 14 days for the practical test and 30 days for the theory test.

New York: order does not matter

In New York, you need both the written and the practical exam. The order does not matter.

What to do with this

Read your state's rule on order before you plan your study. If the written exam comes first, it decides when you can move on, so start there.

If your state puts the practical first, plan the written exam for after it, and leave time before any limit runs out. Study the written material in steady, short sessions.

If your state's rule is not clear, ask your state board or test provider before you book. Do not guess.

The numbers on this page are read from each state's own candidate bulletin and were checked on 2026-10-18.
