What is the cosmetology practical exam?
In Texas, the practical exam is hands-on work. Every procedure is done on a mannequin, and the score is based on safety, sanitation, and procedures.
Think of it as a second part of your license process. The written exam tests what you know. The practical shows what you can do with your hands.
This page gives the short version of each topic. Each topic also has its own page with more detail.
What happens on exam day
In Texas, the examiner watches and rates your work. The examiner may say hello, but may not talk with you beyond that.
Texas also bans talk between candidates after you enter the exam area. Cell phones stay out of the room.
The kit list
Texas also checks your mannequin. If it has marks or colors near the hair, scalp, hairline, hands, or fingers, you earn no points for the sections that use it.
Pack a day early and tick each item off against your own state's candidate guide.
Mistakes that cost points
In Texas, written notes cost you points on every procedure. This includes task lines on containers and a written supply list.
Texas also gives points for steps only when you do them in the listed order. Work that is not done in the time given earns no points.
States with no practical exam
California dropped the practical exam for all four licenses on January 1, 2022.
Illinois and Indiana also ask for no practical exam for any of the four licenses.
Which exam to take first
Colorado works the other way round. A Colorado candidate must pass the practical test before paying for and booking the theory test.
Read your state's candidate guide first, so you know which exam you face first. The written exam is the other part of the process, and it is the part you can study at a desk.
The numbers on this page are read from each state's own candidate bulletin and were checked on 2026-10-18.
