How long is the written exam?

Build your pacing practice around the time and question count for your cosmetology exam. Use your state's page to choose the matching timed practice. Keep the total question count beside the time limit.

PSI national theory: 120 minutes

California uses PSI's national theory exam. California cosmetology candidates get 120 minutes for 110 questions. Of those questions, 100 are scored.

Georgia and Michigan also allow 120 minutes for cosmetology. Their exams contain 110 questions, with 100 scored.

Practice pacing across the full question set, rather than the scored count. Try answering steadily, then reviewing questions that made you pause.

NIC national theory: 90 minutes

The NIC cosmetology theory exam allows 90 minutes. Its total is 110 questions, and 100 count toward the score.

Choose a timed practice set that matches the NIC question load and duration. Practice moving on from a difficult question without letting it take over your session.

Texas: 130 minutes

Texas cosmetology allows 130 minutes for 110 questions. The exam includes 100 scored questions and 10 unscored questions.

For Texas, the scored portion has 120 minutes. Another 10 minutes is added for the unscored questions.

Use the complete Texas time allowance when practicing a full question set. Rehearse your pace with unscored questions included in the total.

Florida: 180 minutes across separate papers

Florida cosmetology has 130 questions across Theory and Clinical papers. Each paper contains 65 questions and allows 90 minutes. Together, they allow 180 minutes.

Practice Theory and Clinical as separate timed sets. Check your pace within each paper, rather than treating the combined time as a shared pool.

Pennsylvania: 135 minutes

Use the matching time and total question count to rehearse an even pace. Practice state-specific questions alongside general questions during the timed set.

New York: 150 minutes

New York cosmetology allows 150 minutes, or 2.5 hours. The question total is not published.

Practice sustaining your focus through a longer timed session. Review where difficult wording slows you down, then rehearse reading those questions without rushing.
